Tools for Job Seekers

It goes without saying that there are a lot of people out there looking for work. We help them in the library every day.

Often I am helping individuals who have worked with their hands their whole life and are struggling with just the mechanics of using the computer. Sometimes they are wrestling with Microsoft Word trying to put together their resume. Other times they are just looking for ways to expand their computer literacy.

It is very rewarding to help these individuals. Any time you can relieve someone of that amount of frustration, it is a good feeling. Sometimes they just need a quick piece of advice to overcome some obstacle and other times we arrange a Book A Librarian session where I can give them some extended one on one time.

Sno-Isle Libraries has a resource that enables people in this situation to help themselves. It is called Learning Express.

Learning Express provides a wide variety of instructional tutorials for all ages. But there are two that I want to emphasis for job seekers.

Once you log into this resource look for two links:

Popular Software Tutorials
Look here for instructional tutorials on WordPerferct, MS Access, MS Excel, MS Outlook, MS Powerpoint, MS Word, and a variety of operating systems.

Workplace Skills Improvement
This link will lead you to guides covering Resumes, Cover Letters, and Interviewing.

If you are frustrated give them a try.

Right now I am diving into MS Access and will be using Learning Express myself!

I have been reading books every since i was a child at the library and i am 76 years old now. The
library's Search the Internet is one of the most helpful places to find books and i enjoy it very much. It also gets me out of the house once a week to get the books from the library.
